Awakening of the South

June 21, 2010

No matter how many times you visit the southern parts of Sri Lanka, there’s always something new and interesting waiting to be discovered. 18 of us journeyed to the southern most points of the island in search of natural beauties and monuments with cultural value.

We stayed at the Commercial Bank holiday bungalow in Kalametiya which is situated right next to the sea.

Hambanthota – A Giant in the making. In another 5-10 years Hambanthota will be the “new-Colombo” of Sri Lanka. It’ll have it’s own International airport, harbour, convention centre and close by wildlife safaris like Yala, Udawalawe, Kumana, etc.

The road condition is equisite. There’re ripe green paddy fields as far as the eye can see.

Thissa Tank is breathtaking. The serene water and the trees, remind you of how fortunate you’re to witness such a wonderous place.

On the way to Katharagama there’re many Buddhist statues on the road.

However the night times are the best. The late evening sky reminds you of the Northern lights in the North Pole. Everything is silent. It was as if… time has frozen.
